I‘ve been a rally technician on the Subaru and Mini World Rally teams and a member of the Aston Martin Racing pit crew, and I now work as a fabricator for Lotus F1 – so it was inevitable that my Land Rover would evolve and be a test bed for other projects.
From subtle features such as the quick-release front grille and the really neat underbonnet LED lighting (allowing maintenance and repairs anywhere, anytime) to complete axle rebuilds (including KAM locking diffs), I’ve carried out all the work myself, using basic tools and even more basic facilities.
The full external roll cage and recently fabricated challenge-spec front end have generated plenty of interest at Land Rover events. It also has front and rear winches, 285 tyres (not easy on a Disco with a full body) and extreme suspension, making it a particularly capable vehicle.
With the addition of other kit I’ve designed – such as a compact, low-cost but highly effective winch anchor – I recently won my first inter-club punch challenge with Northants 4x4… and all this in a vehicle that ferries nurses and care workers around in the snow on Northants 4x4 Response Team duties!
