I'm on my year out of university at the moment, living and working at our family dairy farm in between studying for a veterinary nursing degree at Harper Adams University in Shropshire. Around the farm I'm using my Defender 90 for transportingnew-born calves through the fields, ferrying the dogs about and moving things like electric fences. I prefer it to a tractor; it's smaller, easier to use and faster.
My only mods have been to fit some mud-terrain tyres and to have the negine chipped. As it's a farm vehicle, I've also added an air freshener... all your essentials!
Last year I joined my uni's 4x4 club, which has social nights out, regular meetings to share ideas and weekend greenlaning trips. There's also a brilliant on-campus off-road track, where I went off-roading for the first time.
After going around it slowly a couple of times I found my confidence, but then I thought I was good enough to wade through a pool - and ended-up having to be towed out. No harm done, except to my pride...
I've also been on a Land Rover Experience day, where I tried a Discovery 4 off-road. The tech was amazing, but I do prefer my quirky basic Defender; it's cheaper to fix, and having to use the Discovery's on-board camera felt a bit like cheating. There was no off-road driving talent needed at all!
