I’ve been into Land Rovers since childhood. A friend’s family had a Series II 88in that we used to drive across the fields, and I’ve hankered after my own Land Rover ever since.
A while back I nearly bought a 300Tdi 90, but it wasn’t really suitable for me at the time.
Then I met Mel a couple of years ago. When I told her that I’d always wanted a Defender, she said ‘Well why don’t you get one then?!’ So I ordered this brand-new TDCi 90 on my birthday last year, and it arrived six weeks later.
It’s purely for pleasure – days out and going to shows (we’ll be taking it to LRO’s Peterborough show in September). I haven’t driven it off-road because it’s not undersealed yet, so I’m spending a lot of time underneath it with a paintbrush and Hammerite, painting the weld spots on the chassis which are prone to corrosion. I’ve fitted KBX intakes and a load protector, and I’m also looking for a good roof lining for better insulation in winter.
As you can see, the 90 made the perfect transport for Mel and me at our wedding a few months ago. Mel’s been fantastic and listens to me constantly talking about Land Rovers. She even accepts that there will be a Series IIA coming along soon – what more could a man want!
