I’ve looked after this Defender for 11 years and use it as my everyday car, for greenlaning with the Midland Rover Owners’ Club, and even for call-outs with the MROC 4x4 Response, which I started in 2008.
It was born in 1998 and used by Land Rover for its first six months. It was in good condition when I got it in 2003, and with disc brakes and no electronics, it was just the vehicle I wanted.
I immediately fitted some upgrades – hydraulic winch, bull bar, OME springs and dampers, underbody protection, heated mirrors plus other bits and bobs. Everything’s there for a purpose, nothing just for show. I’ve had a new Turner Engineering cylinder head fitted after the original developed cracks around the injector ports. The gearbox and transfer box were also showing signs of wear, so I replaced them with reconditioned items.
We often take the 90 to France on holidays, and for the latest trip we towed our caravan to the Pyrenees. Although the Defender is lacking in legroom a tad, we actually find it very comfortable. It certainly attracts lots of interest, which is nice… except that it means I have to keep it clean!
