I hadn't done any large mechanical work until owning my second P38. The clutch went within two months of having it, resulting in three months in my garage trying not to kill myself. But I bought yet another P38 – the previous owner had fitted red carpet, a new fitted headlining, stainless steel exhaust, Autobiography seats and generally kept it very well. I got new AT tyres on modular steels, then before it blew up I booked a trip to Salisbury Plain with Pro-Trax. It made light work of the extreme mud and water, keeping up with a 110 Tomb Raider and others.
We also hit the Norfolk greenlanes (thanks to LRO), where some of the fords were great! But one mile from home my partner Maria said why not do one more lane.
We got stuck in a clay pond, and waffle boards couldn't save us. So a plea to the BHCLRC saw salvation from a nice chap called Peter and a couple of guys from 4x4 Mudhunters with a tanked-up Disco 2. Turned out to be a great day!
Did you know that a Queen-sized mattress (or airbed) can fit nicely in the back with rear seats removed? I recommend a bit of support to keep the top of the mattress out of the rear footwell. It makes a nice camper!
However the crowning glory was having the P38 as our wedding car in July 2014.
